Orientation Week!

Orientation Week!

HAPPY LABOR DAY, Everyone!

I didn’t get the chance to post last week during, but I survived my dietetic internship Orientation week! I was hoping to blog throughout the week but….well, yeah. Any who, I thought I’d give y’all an update of what I’ve been up to this past week. Let’s get started!

I’m an official intern!

DAY 1

I woke up extra early to make sure I had plenty of time to get in my morning walk. I knew it was going to be a busy day and ALWAYS feel so much better when I get some exercise first thing…gotta get those endorphins people ;). Once ready for the day, I packed my lunch/snack and made some Kodiak cakes with blueberries and a green smoothie for breakfast. *I don’t know about you guys, but I love eating breakfast at home…it is just so relaxing and keeps the day from feeling so rushed. After fueling up for the day, I went to meet some of my fellow interns today carpool to Dallas. Although it was our first time meeting in-person, I already felt like we had known each other forever, which was such a blessing. We left early for orientation to work on our case studies at Starbucks and beat the Dallas traffic (side note: not sure if it is possible to beat Dallas traffic). The first day was pretty low key. We met our DI director (who was a sweet as could be!) and a couple of our professors.  I definitely felt at home! Traffic coming back to Fort Worth was a beast, but it was expected considering we were driving home in the middle of traffic hour. At least we had each other to hang out with!!

When I returned home for the evening, I prepped a quicker dinner of leftover roasted sweet potatoes, a Hilary’s Eat Well burger, and a bowl of organic cherry tomatoes and cucumber slices.  Super simple, but it hit the spot.  I then threw on some Jammie’s and jumped into bed to work on some assignments — since the internship is a combined DI/master’s program, we have a few online classes that are done during the program.  It is going to be a lot of work (I did watch an episode or 2 of Parks and Rec…because work/life balance, right), but I am SO excited!!  And I am even more excited to get our official rotation schedules tomorrow so I can start filling out/color coordinating my planner (which I am ordering tonight!).

Day 2

I set my alarm for 5:10, but decided I was far too tired and would just take a long walk after orientation finished.  I went back to sleep and it was SUCH a good decision.  My body definitely need that extra 50 minutes!  After making breakfast, it was time to head to Waxahachie for orientation at WIC.  Us Fort Worth girls carpooled and it wasn’t until Kasey and I were on our way to meet up with the others that I realized I forgot my sandwich in the fridge.  Whomp whomp.  Fortunately, our meet up point was at an Albertson’s, so I grabbed some guacamole and EPIC bites to supplement my crackers and clementines :).

Once at WIC, we braced ourselves for hours 5 hours reviewing the usual fun required readings.  Despite the long day and uncomfortable chairs, the staff were so sweet and definitely tried their best to keep the dull stuff as fun as possible!  We got out a little over 30 minutes early, so that was a nice surprise.  From there we headed back to the Fort.  I don’t really remember what I did once I got home, but I am sure it involved washing my face and putting on jammies…before 6:00 because #noshame.

Day 3

Today was the longest day, but it actually was a really good day because WE OFFICIALLY GOT OUR ROTATION SCHEDULES!!!!  I never thought this day would come!  It was so exciting and I must say I think I am really going to like my schedule.   We took a quiz (ungraded…phew!) and I am just going to tell you…I was a little rusty.  Fortunately, we all felt a bit rusty and it was to be expected.  While I don’t usually love pop quizzes, I definitely appreciated this one because it reinforced some of the concepts that had gone out the window after graduation.

Day 4

Out of all of the days, I would have to say this was my favorite.  My morning was pretty much the same, except on this day I was able to get myself out of bed for a long walk.  We left for Dallas at 8:15ish after meeting up with some of our Fort Worth peeps and headed to CitySquare. The plan for the day consisted of meeting a couple of last year’s interns in the morning and heading over to Fresenius after lunch.  I absolutely LOVED having the opportunity to hear from previous interns of the program.  They were both so sweet and definitely helped calm my nerves! One of the girls said she purchased the Inman Review audiobook to listen to on her way to and from rotations.  How brilliant is that?!  I am definitely going to follow her lead on that one!  Of course, I am going to need to get my country/K-Love fix every now and then ;).  After a lunch ordered in from Jason’s Deli, we were off to Fresenius.  Y’all.  The office alone made me want to work there.  It was gorgeous and the views were AMAZING.  I won’t know for sure until I get into the rotation, but I think I may really like it!  I’ll keep ya posted!

We got out close to 4 and headed home for the evening.  Once at home, I worked on homework, made some dinner and relaxed.

Dinner: organic cherry tomatoes + organic cucumber slices + ACV + black pepper

Toast 1 slice with PB + 1 slice with Melt

Eggs + black pepper + TJ’s Everything But the Bagel

Day 5

I slept in a little later on this day (6am), went for a walk, showered, ate breakfast and worked on some school assignments before heading to Meals on Wheels.  I was THRILLED we didn’t have to go to Dallas and had a pretty laid-back day ahead of us.  Once arriving at MOW at 9, we had the opportunity to meet the dietitians and staff we’d be working alongside, went over logistics, took a tour, and chatted over salads from Jason’s Deli (I brought my own lunch, but saved it for later!).  By 11:30, we were done for the day!

After returning home and dropping off my salad, I headed to Whole Foods and Sam’s Club to get a few staples.  Whole Foods was having an amazing sale on EPIC bars, RXBars, and THEO chocolate, so I stocked up.  Once home, I jumped into my jammies and made dinner.  I then worked on homework and watched some Parks and Rec while enjoying a snack of popcorn and dark chocolate-covered cacao nibs.

I can’t believe orientation week is already finished! This week (starting Wednesday), I will start my first rotation with FWISD! I am so excited and will be sure to post whenever I get the chance!
